What it’s about. Ein Mörder und ein Betrüger werden zu langen Haftstrafen in den 30er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts in Frankreich verurteilt und nach Französisch-Guyana deportiert. Der Mörder, Henri Charrière, den alle Papillon nennen, also Schmetterling – und ein solcher ist ihm auch auf die Brust tätowiert worden –, ist kein Mörder. Er war Safeknacker und wurde zu Unrecht des Mordes an einem Zuhälter beschuldigt. Der Betrüger, ein Fälscher, wurde zu Recht verurteilt, hofft aber, dass seine Frau und sein Anwalt ihn mit seinem Geld nach wenigen Monaten wieder freikaufen werden.
