Bekannt für seine Low-Budget-Filme, die stark auf Improvisation setzen, gilt Swanberg als eine Schlüsselfigur der Mumblecore-Bewegung. Seine Filme thematisieren häufig Beziehungen, Sex, Technologie und den Filmdreh selbst. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählen V/H/S (2012), Hannah Takes the Stairs (2007), Win It All (2017), Digging For Fire (2015) und Nights and Weekends (2008), bei dem er gemeinsam mit der Oscar-nominierten Greta Gerwig Regie führte.
