El protagonista de este relato es el pueblo de Fuenteovejuna, que, ofendido por el Comendador, Conde Fernán Gómez -quien no se resigna a acatar las nuevas órdenes de los Reyes Católicos, Isabel y Fernando, pretendiendo mantener el poderío feudal-, deja desbordar su cólera en sangriento asesinato.
