What it’s about. Guerra de Corea (1950-1953). Drama bélico y racial. La acción transcurre en el "paralelo 38" que divide las dos Coreas. Un comando norteamericano es acorralado por el enemigo en una pequeña granja. Muerto el teniente que estaba al mando, lo sustituye el sargento Towler. El problema es que Towler es negro y muchos soldados se niegan a obedecer sus órdenes, aún sabiendo que se juegan la vida. La tensión alcanza su punto culminante con el enfrentamiento entre el sargento negro (Poitier) y un soldado racista (Ladd). Finalmente, acabarán comprendiendo que deben luchar unidos para vencer al enemigo.
