Su madre era mexicana, de Veracruz, y supo contagiarle su buen humor y su alegría. Su padre era un marino cubano, lleno de ilusiones pero con poco dinero. Tras la muerte de sus padres, Juan Manuel quiso rehacer su vida y viajó a un pequeño pueblo cercano a la ciudad de México, donde realizó tareas de campo. Allí conoció a Gabriela Almanzi, se enamoró de ella y tuvieron una hija que llamaron Tatiana.
