En el tren, fuertemente vigilado, también ocupa compartimento el doctor Bernhardt, un pacifista cuya misión es unificar Alemania. Un mensaje en clave accidentalmente hallado en una paloma mensajera ha puesto en alerta a militares y servicios secretos. Antes de llegar a Frankfurt, Bernhardt es asesinado, lo que supone el inicio de una complicada trama de espionaje que pondrá en peligro a todos los pasajeros, ahora unidos para desenmascarar al culpable o culpables del homicidio.
