What it’s about. 1865, Guerra de Secesión. Cinco prisioneros de guerra logran escapar en globo de Fort Richmond. Atrapados en una tormenta y con el globo dañado, se encuentran "naufragando" en una isla volcánica desierta en algún lugar del Pacífico. Justo antes de un aterrizaje forzoso, su líder, el brillante ingeniero Cyrus Smith, cae y muere aparentemente en las furiosas aguas, pero luego aparece completamente ileso y sin recordar cómo fue salvado.
