Capricorn One (1977): cast, story & where to watch

Released in 1977, Capricorn One is an action, thriller, drama and science fiction film directed by Peter Hyams, running about 123 minutes. “The mission was a sham. The murders were real.” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. In order to protect the reputation of the American space program, a team of NASA administrators turn the first Mars mission into a phony Mars landing. Under threat of harm to their families the astronauts play their part in the deception on a staged set in a deserted military base. But once the real ship returns to Earth and burns up on re-entry, the astronauts become liabilities. Now, with the help of a crusading reporter, they must battle a sinister conspiracy that will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden.

Who’s in it. Capricorn One stars Elliott Gould as Robert Caulfield, James Brolin as Col. Charles Brubaker, Brenda Vaccaro as Kay Brubaker and Sam Waterston as Lt. Col. Peter Willis, among others.

How it landed. With an audience score of 6.8/10, Capricorn One has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $12M at the box office.
