Rising Sun (1993): cast, story & where to watch

Released in 1993, Rising Sun is an action, thriller and drama film directed by Philip Kaufman, running about 125 minutes. “A collision of East and West. A conspiracy of seduction and murder. A battle between tradition and power. Business is war.” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. When a prostitute is found dead in a Los Angeles skyscraper occupied by a large Japanese corporation, detectives John Connor and Web Smith are called in to investigate. Although Connor has previous experience working in Japan, cultural differences make their progress difficult until a security disc showing the murder turns up. Close scrutiny proves the disc has been doctored, and the detectives realize they're dealing with a cover-up as well.

Who’s in it. Rising Sun stars Sean Connery as Capt. John Connor, Wesley Snipes as Lt. Webster Smith, Tia Carrere as Jingo Asakuma and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Eddie Sakamura, among others.

How it landed. With an audience score of 6.1/10, Rising Sun has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $107.2M at the box office.
