Old Los Angeles poster

Released in 1948, Old Los Angeles is a western film directed by Joseph Kane, running about 88 minutes. “DARING DESPERADO - FIGHTING MARSHAL - WOMAN OF MYSTERY - MEXICAN SPITFIRE” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. Also known as California Outpost, Old Los Angeles stars Bill Elliot in one of his expanded-budget Republic "specials." The film is set during the early statehood days of California, with Elliot keeping the peace and warding off plunderers and marauders. As always, Elliot is a "peaceable man"--until he beats the tar out of those who rile him. The problem with Elliot's more expensive Republic vehicles is that action invariably took a back seat to plot, romance, costumes and decor. Within a year of Old Los Angeles, Elliot started a more austere, less prettified and far superior western series.

Who’s in it. Old Los Angeles stars Bill Elliott as Bill Stockton (as William Elliott), John Carroll as Johnny Morrell, Catherine McLeod as Marie Marlowe and Joseph Schildkraut as Luis Savarin, among others.

How it landed. With an audience score of 5.5/10, Old Los Angeles has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response.
