Mais la jeune femme aime en secret Piotr, le fils d'un riche paysan, et c'est Raissa qui succombe peu à peu aux charmes d'Alexei. Pour constituer la dot de sa nièce, Raissa se voit contrainte de céder une partie de sa forêt au père de Piotr. Elle s'inquiète aussi à l'idée de voir ressurgir son neveu Guennadi, qu'elle a laissé grandir loin d'elle dans la pauvreté. Ce dernier, devenu comédien sans le sou, songe pourtant à aller faire un tour chez sa tante…
