What it’s about. Hutton Buscel, un petit village du Yorkshire. Celia Teasdale, l'épouse du directeur de l'école, fait gaiement son ménage de printemps. Sur une table du jardin, elle trouve un paquet de cigarettes et décide de s'autoriser quelques bouffées du délicieux poison. Arrive Lionel Hepplewick, le gardien de l'école, secrètement amoureux de Celia, qu'il sent prête à tromper son époux. Sylvie Bell, la bonne des Teasdale, a bien une amourette avec Lionel, mais celui-ci n'y accorde pas beaucoup d'importance. En revanche, le sentiment qu'il porte à Celia, dont il bichonne, à sa demande, le jardin, est plus sérieux. Celia elle-même, délaissée par Toby, son ivrogne de mari, est mûre pour l'aventure avec Lionel...
