Alors qu'il est en train de jouer au go avec l'autre professeur, un groupe d'élève part faire sans autorisation une promenade en barque. La barque se retourne et un des jeunes meurt. Estimant qu'il a manqué à son devoir, le père abandonne son métier et va devoir se séparer de son fils qui regrettera toute sa vie de n'avoir pu vivre avec son père que quelques moments privilégiés.
