Melleville s'installe incognito dans son hôtel où il est fraîchement reçu et logé dans les combles. Un autre gagnant, J. Berthier, modeste artisan, est pris pour Malleville et comme tel fort bien traité. Renée, la fille du businessman millionnaire, est également dans l'hôtel et s'éprend de Berthier. Les méprises se poursuivent cahin-caha jusqu'au mariage des deux jeunes gens.
