What it’s about. Déçu de ne pas avoir reçu l'aval des autorités pour poursuivre son projet de recherche - qui dérange apparemment - sur la mortalité des prématurés, le médecin-chef Schmith envisage de quitter la RDA. Il prend contact avec des collègues de l'Ouest, prêts à organiser sa fuite et à lui trouver un poste. Mais quelque temps plus tard, la situation a changé : le docteur Schmith apprend que son projet est approuvé et il obtient même une promotion. Sur le plan personnel aussi, sa vie s'améliore. Il a entamé une liaison avec sa collègue Katharina. Plus question pour lui de passer en République fédérale allemande. Mais les passeurs qui devaient s'occuper de son cas ne l'entendent pas de cette oreille...
