Il demande à Grga Pitic, parrain de la communauté gitane et vieil ami de la famille, de le financer. Grga accepte, mais Matko n’est pas à la hauteur et se fait doubler par le dangereux Dadan. Pour solder sa dette, Dadan lui propose de marier son fils Zare à Ladybird, sa minuscule sœur cadette. Mais Zane en aime une autre, la blonde Ida. Le mariage a lieu. La mariée profite d’un moment d’inattention et s’enfuit…
