What it’s about. Durant l'hiver 1979, à Fenyang, une troupe de théâtre présente sa pièce à la gloire de Mao-Tsé-Toung. La vie de Minliang et de ses camarades tourne autour des représentations et des histoires d'amour naissantes. Au printemps 1980, des petits changements viennent peu à peu modifier la vie de la troupe de théâtre : musique pop, cheveux permanentés, cigarettes au bec… Au milieu des années 80, la politique du gouvernement change et les subventions d’État sont supprimées. L'avenir de la troupe devient incertain, de même que les rapports entre ses membres.
