What it’s about. A Guadalarda règne un tyranneau, le "protecteur" Don Salvador. Un groupe de libération, "Justicia y Libertad", est surpris et détruit par la police. Son chef venait de commander une bague à un bijoutier français, Michel Dumartin. Michel est arrêté comme conspirateur et condamné à mort. Christine, sa jeune femme, parvient à le voir quelques minutes grâce à la vénalité du directeur de la prison, Don Gaspar. Contre la promesse de douze diamants, toute leur fortune, Don Gaspar accepte de faire passer Michel pour mort et de l'expédier, deux jours plus tard, à la fosse commune.
