Jacques Dufilho, tout droit avec son air si spécial dans son uniforme, joue le rôle du commandant Gardefort, ancien écuyer du Cadre Noir de Saumur. Le commandant Gardefort aime tellement sa jument, qu’il a tant travaillée faisant corps avec elle, que sa femme finit par le quitter. N’ayant pas moyens de payer les frais du divorce, cet homme est tourmenté entre sa passion pour sa jument et son désarroi conjugal.
