What it’s about. Histoire d'une famille française de 1871 à nos jours (1940). Le père Froment est tué lors du siège de Paris. Son fils, Félix, s'expatrie et devient un grand colonisateur. Le second, Bernard, est instituteur et se marie. Estelle, qui a élevé ses deux frères, reste célibataire. Bernard a deux enfants : Marie, qui épouse Robert, un artiste, et Alain, qui s'enthousiasme des premiers essais de l'aviation. Alain et Robert sont tués au cours de la guerre 14-18. Mais ce dernier a laissé un fils, Christian, qui sera médecin, suprême ambition du grand-père Froment, et s'apprête à partir en 1939 pour que la génération suivante n'ait pas encore à aller se battre.
