What it’s about. À sa sortie de prison, où elle a purgé une peine de 10 ans pour avoir tué son mari, Annie se rend chez sa belle-mère Irène. Celle-ci lui réserve un accueil glacial et s'interpose entre elle et sa fille adolescente Sophie, dont la matriarche avait obtenu la garde au lendemain du drame. Faisant croire à Irène qu'elle est partie s'établir à Vancouver, Annie s'installe en ville, déniche un boulot et convainc son agente de probation de l'aider à récupérer Sophie. Cette dernière, à l'insu de sa grand-mère, rend régulièrement visite à sa mère, afin de mieux la connaître et de comprendre les circonstances entourant la mort de son père. Mais lorsqu'Irène découvre que Sophie voit Annie en cachette, elle joue sa dernière carte afin de compromettre leur affection naissante.
