Released in 2004, Salvador Allende is a documentaire film directed by Patricio Guzmán, running about 100 minutes. “A leftist revolutionary or a reformist democrat?” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. Salvador Allende a donné sa vie pour le Chili, son pays. Fondateur du Parti Socialiste Chilien, marxiste convaincu sans être un théoricien, il est avant tout un humaniste, un "gentilhomme" en politique. Candidat à l'élection présidentielle à trois reprises, en 52, en 58 où il frôle la victoire, en 64 enfin, il est à chaque fois battu. Il reprend la lutte, enraciné dans le jeu démocratique. Le 4 novembre 1970, il est élu président de la République et s'engage à corps perdu dans la transformation socialiste de son pays, obsédé par le respect pointilleux de la démocratie et de ses institutions. Cet amour pour le respect de la loi, pour la démocratie, va lui coûter la vie et plonger le Chili dans la longue nuit du fascisme durant plus de 17 ans.
