What it’s about. Émile Magis, petit employé de bureau terne et cynique, aimerait bien se trouver une petite amie. Il va, à la suite d’une méprise, devenir l’amant d’une vieille fille, mademoiselle Duvant. De plus, grâce à un collègue de bureau qui lui laisse prendre sa suite, la pétillante Rose devient également sa maitresse. Gaston Berthoullet, un fonctionnaire, le prend en amitié. Il le fait entrer au ministère et Magis épouse sa fille ainée Hortense. Mais celle-ci se lasse vite de lui et prend le distingué Victor Dugommier comme amant. Magis, ayant découvert son infortune, échafaude un plan pour se débarrasser d’Hortense et de Victor.
