Le réalisateur, Uli Edel, découvrit "Last Exit to Brooklyn" apres sept années d'études dans un collège de jésuites. "Il m'a ouvert les yeux sur la réalité, il m'a fait l'effet d'un coup de poing et m'a brutalement arraché à une jeunesse quelque peu rêveuse".
