What it’s about. Dans un poste isolé en plein désert, Péhu, un garçon simple et rustre sur le point de mourir, confie qu'il a jadis tué et volé pour une femme, Marie, à qui il conserve toute sa confiance. Guéri contre toute attente, Péhu rentre en France avec l'intention de retrouver Marie et l'argent qu'il a placé dans une cachette. Charles tue son camarade pour le voler mais ne trouve rien ; il va voir Marie qui s'est mariée, oubliant le malheureux Péhu et tente de les faire chanter. Devant leur refus, il les dénonce comme les meurtriers de Péhu. Pour lui, il ira se faire tuer en Afrique.
