What it’s about. Automne 1915 : transpercé d'un coup de baïonnette, Simon est envoyé en convalescence en Bretagne avec ses amis, Henri (amputé d'une jambe) et Lucien, blessé au bras. Il y tombe immédiatement amoureux de Marthe, jeune institutrice qui se donne à lui tandis que le médecin colonel entretient une liaison avec la directrice de l'école. Henri meurt de gangrène gazeuse. Le colonel propose à Simon de le maintenir en convalescence, mais le jeune homme refuse et remonte au front. Marthe (qui est par ailleurs fiancée à un autre soldat, Martin) est enceinte. Martin apprend la vérité. Au cours d'une attaque, Lucien est tué tandis que Simon est porté disparu. Après que l'armistice a été signé, Simon, qui était prisonnier des Allemands, réapparaît et retrouve sa compagne et son jeune fils...
