Le chef de Bora Bora monte à bord et reçoit un message du vieil Hitu, émissaire du chef de l'île voisine de Fanuma. Dans ce message, il est dit que, la vierge consacrée aux dieux à Fanuma étant morte, Réri a été choisie, à cause de sa beauté, de sa vertu et de son sang royal, pour la remplacer. Désormais aucun homme ne peut la toucher. Elle est tabou...
