What it’s about. Il y a quelques années, un pirate informatique surnommé « le rieur » avait kidnappé pendant deux jours un industriel fabricant des micromachines dans le domaine médical. Le criminel était apparu sur une chaîne de télévision affublé d’un smiley naïf à la place du visage. Depuis, on lui prête l’orchestration d’un vaste racket auprès de différentes sociétés de micromachines. 6 ans plus tard, le rieur refait son apparition et pirate le cerveau d’un préfet de police. Il dit vouloir ouvrir les yeux du monde sur un vaste complot médico-politico-militaire. C’est alors que la Section 9 est confrontée à nombreux actes terroristes commis par des individus se réclamant tous être « le rieur ». Mais qui sont ces copies ? Qui est l’original ? Certains groupuscules ne se serviraient-ils pas du rieur pour œuvrer à leurs fins ? Motoko et son équipe doivent démêler cet écheveau qui ira jusqu’à mettre en péril la vie de plusieurs membres de la cyber-police.
