La descente aux enfers d'une jeune femme fragile dans le New York décadent des années 70 1972 – January Wayne, la jeune et jolie fille d'un ancien magnat d'Hollywood aujourd'hui ruiné, retourne à New York après un long séjour dans un hôpital suisse. Son père a épousé une millionnaire qui tente de la marier avec son jeune cousin David Milford, un riche playboy. January commence à travailler pour une ancienne camarade d'école, l'éditrice en chef d'un magazine féminin à succès. Elle tombe amoureuse de Tom Colt, un écrivain plus âgé qui lui sert de père de substitution mais la délaisse.
