What it’s about. Après avoir assisté à une fusillade entre voleurs de bétail qui a fait une victime innocente, le conseil municipal de Outpost accepte la proposition du shérif Jackson de recruter un adjoint professionnel du révolver. Le choix de Jackson se porte sur son ami d'enfance, Hank Bartlett, au palmarès impressionnant de quinze villes nettoyées et dix huit hommes tués. Mais Bartlett meurt dans le désert sur la route de Outpost. Un vagabond, Jim Blake, l'enterre, s'approprie ses révolvers et la lettre de Jackson, puis prend sa place d'adjoint à Outpost. Dès son arrivée, il se heurte à l'hostilité d'une partie de la population, dont Gail Sterling, qui était parmi les opposants à embaucher un tueur.
