What it’s about. En 1943, le capitaine Cliff Brandon est un pilote d'avion cargo ravitaillement des troupes alliées combattant les Japonais en Chine. Quand il ne vole pas il est habitué a consommé de l'alcool dans le bar local.Une nuit, alors il trébuche ivre à la maison, il rencontre un vieil homme chinois qui lui offre une fille, sa fille Shu-Jen. Brandon lui paie, mais quand il voit la jeune femme, il demande au vieil homme à la garder. Quand il se réveille le lendemain matin, il trouve Shu-Jen là. Après le père Cairns, un résident de longue date de la Chine, exprime sa désapprobation, Brandon tente de son mieux pour se débarrasser d'elle, de confier la tâche à Ellington, un jeune garçon chinois qui parle bien l' anglais. Ellington essaie de la vendre à la prostitution, mais le père Cairns arrive a convaincre Shu-Jen de revenir avec Brandon.
