What it’s about. Un jeune Américain, Chester Schofield, gagne au poker la moitié de l'usine du père de sir Cuthbert Ware-Armitage. Mais, plutôt que de s'associer, les deux hommes préfèrent jouer leur moitié d'usine lors du rallye de Monte-Carlo, auquel ils participent l'un et l'autre. Deux bagnards allemands, qui transportent un trésor en diamants, deux policiers italiens, Angelo et Marcello, le major Dawlish et un groupe de jeunes féministes françaises se présentent aussi sur la ligne de départ. Le périple dure deux mille kilomètres pendant lesquels chacun, et surtout sir Cuthbert, s'évertue à distancer ses adversaires, d'une manière pas toujours réglementaire...
