À Londres, Hassan Jena, le premier ministre d’une république orientale demande au professeur d'université à Oxford, David Pollock, spécialiste des hiéroglyphes, de s’infiltrer chez son adversaire, Nejim Beshraavi, un magnat du pétrole, pour y décoder un message composé de hiéroglyphes et déjouer ainsi un complot d'assassinat visant Jena. L'homme d'État doit ratifier un traiter qui mettra fin au monopole pétrolier de son rival, Beshraavi. Mais ce dernier prend cordialement David en otage, qui parvient à s’échapper grâce au concours de Yasmin Azir, la maîtresse de Beshraav. Elle ment à tour de bras, il semble difficile de savoir qui est-elle réellement et qui soutient-elle ?
