Un matin, s'affiche sur l’écran de télévision en face de lui le portrait d’Axel Challe, désigné comme le principal suspect dans l’affaire du meurtre d’une jeune fille, à Guerches-sur-Isoire. Lorsqu’il insiste auprès de son rédacteur en chef pour partir sur le champ en reportage là-bas, il lui explique qu’il en vient, de là-bas, qu’il y a grandi. Ce qu’il ne dit pas, c’est qu’il connait bien Axel Challe : c’était son ami. Plus encore, Axel Challe était le demi-dieu de son enfance.
