Charlotte Collins, journaliste pour un média people, doit interviewer le comte de Sorhagen, que personne n'a vu depuis qu'il est adolescent, afin que son patron accepte de l'augmenter. Elle pense par erreur qu'il s'agit d'Adam, le jardinier, mais le conseil royal ne voulant pas divulguer le fait que le comte n'existe plus, il charge Adam de se faire passer pour lui. Le stratagème fonctionne. Charlotte, qui se fait elle-même passer pour une journaliste d'une revue prestigieuse, et le prétendu comte passent beaucoup de temps ensemble, notamment à une réunion d'organisation du bal. Lors de cette réunion, ils proposent tous les deux d'ouvrir le bal à la population. L'idée est refusée. Entre-temps, le patron de Charlotte intervient pour avoir son article à tout prix, poussant le conseil royal à mentir plus longtemps que prévu.
