What it’s about. À Patterson, une bourgade de quelques milliers d'âmes dans l'Outback, un jeune ouvrier agricole aborigène, Marley Thompson, champion local de football australien, et un routard de son âge, employé comme lui sur la plus grosse exploitation de la région, ont disparu en abandonnant leur véhicule dans le désert. Ayant demandé du renfort à Melbourne, Emma James, la chef de la police locale, voit débarquer Jay Swan, un inspecteur aborigène taciturne. Après qu'ils ont tous deux interrogé Tony Ballantyne, le patron des deux disparus, Jay Swan découvre qu'Emma James n'est autre que sa sœur, et qu'elle détient une part de l'exploitation. Swan lui reproche d'avoir caché ce possible conflit d'intérêts. Elle, de son côté, s'agace de sa tendance à faire cavalier seul. La fille de Swan, Crystal, une ado aussi jolie que paumée, débarque alors sans l'avoir prévenu.
