Il a été créé par la BBC et le premier épisode, narré par David Tennant, a été diffusé sur BBC One le 29 décembre 2011. Un sous-ensemble de deux heures de Earthflight a été diffusé en octobre 2012 par Discovery Channel aux États-Unis sous le titre Winged Planet. L'intégralité de la première série a été diffusée sur PBS, à partir de septembre 2013, sous le titre Earthflight, A Nature Special Presentation.
