What it’s about. George Gently, inspecteur à Scotland Yard réputé pour son intégrité, vient de perdre sa femme, assassinée par un chauffard à Londres. Il est persuadé que l'assassin n’est autre que Joe Webster, un gangster notoire. Lorsque celui ci est signalé à l'enterrement d'un jeune motard dans le Nord, Gently demande son transfert et devient inspecteur chef de la région du Northumberland, située dans le nord de l’Angleterre, pour le traquer. Après avoir résolu ce cas, Gently décide de rester dans la région. Il est épaulé dans ses enquêtes par un policier, John Bacchus, jeune et bouillant assistant aux méthodes très personnelles.
