What it’s about. Kazama Shin est un pilote d'avion d'une compagnie japonaise, brillant et à l'avenir très prometteur. Tout jeune fiancé à Ryoko, la fille du patron de Yamato Airlines, il a toutes les qualités pour atteindre les sommets. Mais en 1979, ivre et influencé par Kanzaki Satoru, qu'il pensait être son ami, Shin signe malgré lui un contrat de mercenaire avec une légion étrangère. Il est contraint de se rendre au royaume d'Asran, sans même pouvoir prévenir sa bien aimée. Il devient donc pilote de chasse de la base militaire Area 88 ! Cependant, il n'y a que trois manières de quitter cet enfer : honorer son contrat de trois ans, payer 1 500 000 $ ou déserter au risque de se faire exécuter. Que doit-il choisir pour rejoindre son aimée ?
