What it’s about. Le Comte de Chagnie a découvert le talent de chanteuse de Christine sur une place de marché et l'a envoyée chez son ami Carrière, le directeur de l'opéra parisien. Son arrogant successeur refuse de laisser une femme de basse naissance chanter dans son opéra, mais emploie gracieusement Christine comme gadrobiere pour sa femme Charlotta, qui est installée comme première chanteuse. Il combat également le fantôme, un inconnu qui vit depuis de nombreuses années dans les catacombes en dessous de l'opéra et s'est vu accorder des privilèges par Carrière. Cependant le fantôme sait se défendre et en même temps aide Christine dans sa carrière…
