Ce film montre l'ampleur des moyens mis en oeuvre par la communauté scientifique internationale, tout en exposant le mécanisme d'une éclipse et son intérêt pour la recherche fondamentale. L'utilisation du supersonique Concorde 001, spécialement adapté par l'Aérospatiale pour ce vol, a permis d'observer pour la première fois une éclipse pendant 74 minutes et d'assister à la progression de l'ombre de la lune se déplaçant sur la terre.
