What it’s about. Les îles Kerguelen, surnommées « îles de la Désolation », sont un archipel français d'îles subantarctiques tout au sud de l'océan Indien. Elles constituent l'un des cinq districts des Terres australes et antarctiques françaises (TAAF). Inhabité, l'archipel est découvert dans le sud de l'océan Indien le 12 février 1772 par le navigateur français Yves Joseph de Kerguelen de Trémarec. Ce film scientifique de Gilbert Dassonville, destiné au grand public et à l'enseignement, présente les missions scientifiques en cours en 1963 sur les îles Kerguelen. La station permanente de Port-aux-Français fondée en 1950, l'archipel et la faune environnante sont documentés en suivant les équipes pluridisciplinaires (biologie, géophysique, géologie, météorologie).
