Quelques groupes rebelles sévissent encore à travers le pays et le capitaine Gérard, qui commande un détachement militaire profite du calme relatif pour reconduire chez son père, l'insoumis Emir de Bel-Rashad, la belle Clara de retour d'un séjour en France. Gérard tombe amoureux de Clara et revient un soir, déguisé en indigène, lui faire la cour, mais il surprend une distribution d'armes et comprend alors le danger de l'insurrection. Il retourne au fort et décide d'aller chercher des renforts, mais à son retour la garnison a été anéantie...
