Un dangereux bandit, Al Capone, qui avait déjà tenté de nuire à Tintin durant son voyage au Congo (où Tintin a démantelé un trafic de ce bandit), décide que le jeune reporter ne doit pas repartir vivant de la grande ville de Chicago, ou alors, qu'il ne reste pas un jour entier dans la ville. Et Al Capone ne plaisante pas évidemment, jamais. Les bandits à son service tendent des pièges à Tintin, qui , rusé, leur échappe, en déjouant les premiers pièges des hommes de mains de Capone. Mais le reporter est bien loin d'être au bout de ses peines, car les bandits n'abandonnent pas aussi facilement…
