What it’s about. Joseph Conroy, un policier respecté de tous, soupçonne un homme arrêté pour ivresse, Al Willis, d'avoir tué trois de ses confrères. L'individu est vite relâché et Conroy s'acharne sur cet homme sans avoir de preuves. Le policier devient particulièrement brutal, ce qui lui vaut d'être révoqué. Il n'en abandonne pas la lutte pour autant et suit son suspect, qui a quitté femme et enfants pour se réfugier chez sa maîtresse, une chanteuse de cabaret, dénommée Marianna.
