What it’s about. Dans un quartier chaud de New York, l'inspecteur Eddie Ryan effectue une descente de routine dans un dancing afin de confondre un trafiquant de drogue. Repéré, le policier décide d'interroger le dealer. Mais, en se sauvant, l'individu poursuivi par Ryan tombe d'un toit et se tue. Le flic est accusé de meurtre et suspendu de ses fonctions en attendant les conclusions de l'enquête. Il trouve alors du travail dans un bar. Un soir, il reçoit la visite d'un de ses anciens collègues, Gigi. Le lendemain, il apprend que celui-ci a été assassiné. Ryan décide de mener l'enquête seul. Dans un hôtel borgne, il découvre Rita, l'amie de Gigi, droguée à mort. Elle semble en outre avoir baigné dans un trafic d'armes...
