What it’s about. New York, 1932. Rayford Gibson, beau parleur et petit escroc, et Claude Banks, un employé de banque plutôt naïf à l'allure fière, se croisent au Spanky's Club, un club mal famé où ils ont l'un et l'autre accumulé d'énormes dettes de jeu. Bien décidé à récupérer son dû, Spanky Johnson, le propriétaire de l'établissement, leur offre de travailler pour lui et leur propose de participer à une affaire louche. Partis livrer du whisky frelaté, ils se retrouvent sur les lieux d'un crime et sont arrêtés par un policier raciste.
