Un jour, Ring rencontre pour la première fois de sa vie... une femme, Wilda Lanning, fille d'un riche éleveur, en la sauvant d'un troupeau de chevaux sauvages. Le père de Ring meurt peu de temps après, piétiné par un cheval furieux, et Ring, accompagné de Wilda, quitte le canyon avec un troupeau de mustangs destinés à être vendus à Gunsight.
