Aussi, le vieil homme ébranlé décide de se laisser accuser et avoue le triple meurtre à un gendarme. Quant à ses fils, Gustave et Clovis, ils s'empressent de signer les papiers dénonçant leur père. Si le premier est plutôt faible et influençable, le second, en revanche, se venge ainsi, à sa manière, de son géniteur, qui a toujours refusé de lui donner son lopin de terre à cultiver. Bientôt, la gendarmerie organise une reconstitution du crime avant de reconduire Gaston en prison...
