Jusqu'au jour où Griffe d'Ours, un vieux chasseur, l'accueille dans sa cabane et lui inculque les rudiments de son art. Devenu apte à affronter seul les périls de la montagne, Johnson quitte Griffe d'Ours et se lie d'amitié avec des Indiens Crow. Il recueille Caleb, un garçon muet, seul survivant d'un massacre de Blancs par les Indiens, et épouse une Amérindienne, Cygne, que lui donne un chef nommé Deux-Langues...
